How close is Marrakech to the desert?
Merzouga is a small Berber town and the gateway to the best desert in the country, famous for its beautiful orange dunes at sunset, and also as a starting point for exciting adventure activities in the Sahara.
The dunes of Erg Chebbi are about 561 kilometers from Marrakech along the N9 and N10 roads that pass through the Dades Valley and the Todra Valley.
The closest dunes to Marrakech are those of Erg Chegaga, but they are more surrounded by wilderness. Once you reach the town of M’hamid via Zagora, the tarmac road disappears under the dunes, a 4×4 vehicle is needed to get to the highest dunes of Erg Chegaga. The dunes of Erg Chegaga are located about 520 kilometers from Marrakech in the direction of Zagora and you imagine yourself defiantly in a deep desert far away from civilization.
Facts Check: The real Sahara desert is approximately 561 km via the N9 and N10 roads from Marrakech and 552 km via the N10 on the way to the province of Zagora.
Wondering which Marrakech desert tour to choose?
If you need help with your decision we have some great guides who do these tours daily, get in touch and ask them anything you would like to know.
Merzouga or Zagora?
If you’re looking for something more laid back, Merzouga may be the better option. It’s great if you want to combine sightseeing with an extremely relaxing camel ride through the Sahara Desert. While Zagora is ideal for those who want to experience a quick desert adventure with an adrenaline-pumping camel ride, breathtaking scenery, and the ultimate Sahara desert experience.
If you start your desert tour from Marrakech, it is better to do it in 4 or 5 days instead of 3 days, because it will be a long journey on the last day. Don’t forget your camera as there are many excellent photogenic locations!
Can’t decide? Our team can help! We take into account your preferences and Morocco travel itinerary before suggesting which tour might be best suited to you.
Should I choose a 2-day Marrakech desert tour?
Experiencing the desert in just 2 days from Marrakech will be difficult, especially in winter. You will indeed pass through the High Atlas Mountains, admire breathtaking views of the Draa valley, and visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ait Benhaddou before reaching Ouarzazate, etc. But you will always find someone behind you complaining about missing the sunset in the desert.
So if you want to experience the real Sahar desert, don’t do it on a 2-day trip, you are on vacation, don’t rush. Take the time to enjoy the moments in the desert with a camel ride, get socialized with local nomads and learn about their way of life, and spend the night in the camp under millions of stars.
